iReport
Configuration and Logging. 18
Logging
In For the First Time. 20
This document describes how to install and configure iReport on a
Microsoft Windows PC.
This version of iReport is, initially, an evaluation copy with a 30-day,
fully-featured, time-limited license. If you wish to continue to use iReport
after this time, you must purchase a full license from Oakleaf Consultancy
Limited, by following the instructions given later in this document.
The terms and conditions of the license are displayed as part of the
installation program.
This version of iReport runs on Windows 98, ME, 2000, and XP, and
contains a built-in Microsoft Access database for storing the system’s
information.
Further versions of the software to work with Oracle, MS SQL Server and
MySQL are available from Oakleaf Consultancy Limited. Versions are also
available to run on a Linux server (or other platform that can run Java and
Apache Tomcat).
In all versions of the software, the functionality of the software is
identical, but by its nature, whilst MS Access is very easy to install and use,
it is not the most suitable database to support a large number of concurrent users.
Oakleaf Consultancy Limited recommends that if you intend to support a large
number of concurrent users, you should purchase one of the other, more powerful
versions of iReport.
For further information about the usage of iReport, please see the iReport
User Guide and the iReport Administration Guide, and all information at http://www.oakleafconsultancy.com/OCLiReport/index.jsp
that relates to the iReport product.
The following prerequisites are necessary to run
this version of iReport.
Any other prior
installation of Java will prevent iReport being installed.
iReport is a web-based
application, and as such requires a web-server to run. iReport makes use of the
Apache Tomcat web-server, version 5.0. If this is not present on your PC, the
iReport installation program will automatically install it.
iReport also uses the Java Runtime
Environment v1.3.1. If Java V1.3 or V1.4 is not present on your PC, the iReport
installation program will automatically install it. If another version of Java
is already installed on your PC (e.g. V1.2) then the iReport installation will
not complete.
If you have questions about
either of these products, please see the Tomcat and Java web-sites for more
information, or contact Oakleaf Consultancy Limited with your questions at sales@oakleafconsultancy.com
Because iReport runs on a
web-server, anyone with network access to the web-server could, potentially,
access the iReport system. iReport has its own password-protected login
requirements for all users wishing to user the system, but this would be no
defence against a determined hacker.
If the server on which you
run iReport is behind a firewall, or only accessible from an intranet, then
security will probably not be of concern. However, if the server on which you
run iReport is accessible from the internet, you may wish to take further
action to protect both iReport and your server.
Oakleaf Consultancy Limited
will be happy to advise on the best security configuration for your server.
However, the standard iReport installation does NOT contain any special
security features, as these should be set-up depending on your individual
requirements. Please bear this in mind
when determining where to install iReport.
a.
Determine the IP address or hostname of your PC. You
may do this by running a Windows Command Prompt session (or DOS prompt) from
the Programs menu. In the command prompt type :- ipconfig
This should provide output similar to the following:-
Windows 2000 IP
Configuration
Ethernet adapter Intel
Pro 1000 MT Gigabit Ethernet Adapter - onboard:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

In
this case, the IP address of the machine is 192.168.236.79 Make a note of this,
you will need it later.
If you cannot determine your IP
address, then your System
In
order for other users to always be able to find iReport, iReport must be run on
a machine whose IP address is fixed and does not change.
b. On the
PC where iReport will be installed, create a folder named c:\iReport
c. Download the iReport installation program, named
setupiReportAccessV3.1.exe from http://www.oakleafconsultancy.com/OCLiReport/download.jsp and
store it in c:\iReport
|
In the Windows Start menu,
click on “Run…”. |
|
|
In the Run window, type
“c:\iReport\setupiReportAccessV3.1.exe” Click on the “OK”
button. |
|
|
If a previous version of iReport is detected, you
will receive a warning similar to that shown here. In this case, before
you can install the latest version of iReport, you should
uninstall the older version that is
already installed. If you are upgrading from a previous version of iReport
and want to keep your existing project, user, group and other information,
then before you uninstall you should save a copy of the iReport database
file, iReport.mdb, containing the user and
project information for iReport. This file should be stored in a safe area
that will not be affected by the installation process. After you have
completed the installation, you should replace the installed iReport.mdb
file with your saved version. |
|
|
The installer program will
now run and display a license agreement. You should read this agreement
carefully, as it defines the terms under which you may use the software.
If you accept the terms and conditions, click on the “I Agree” button. If you do not agree, click on “Cancel” and the installation will be aborted. |
|
|
A screen is now displayed
where you should enter your user name and email address. This information
is not, at the moment, sent to Oakleaf Consultancy Limited, or to anyone
else. It is simply kept on your PC. If you later decide to purchase a full
version of the iReport software, this information will be used by Oakleaf
Consultancy Limited to construct a software key to allow your version of
iReport to continue to work beyond the 30 day limit. |
|
|
The installer will now
look for a current installation of Tomcat on your PC. If the system
finds a version of Tomcat already installed, it will make use of that
version and this screen will not even be displayed. No further action in
this step is necessary. Please proceed to step 6. |
|
|
The iReport installer was
not able to find a Tomcat installation, but you know that one exists on
your PC. You must specify the Tomcat root folder name in the text entry
box. (For help in choosing the correct folder name - the correct folder
will contain a sub-folder called “webapps”). Click on the “Next”
button, and proceed to step 6.
|
|
|
a. The iReport installer
was not able to find an existing Tomcat installation, so you have chosen
to install the Tomcat version bundled with iReport.
|
|
|
b. In order for Tomcat to
install properly, a version of Java must exist on your PC. If a correct
version (V1.3 or v1.4) of Java is already installed on your PC, the
following steps will be skipped. Please continue at point
i.
|
|
|
c. If an incorrect version of Java (e.g. V1.2) is already installed on your PC, then the installation will abort. You would then need to upgrade your version of Java to V1.3 or V1.4, or remove it completely from your machine before continuing. |
|
|
d. If Java could not be found on your PC, the iReport
installer will install it for you. You will receive this message. |
|
|
e. Click on the “OK” button. |
|
|
f. You will now be presented with the Java License agreement. Please read it and, if you agree to its terms, click on “Yes” to continue with the installation. If you click on “No” the installation will abort. |
|
|
g. The next screen allows you to choose where Java will be installed on your PC. Please choose a suitable folder, make a note of it and then click on the “Next” button. |
|
|
h. You may then choose whether to use this version of
Java in the internet browsers installed on your system. If you do not
understand this screen then simply clear the check-boxes associated with
each browser and click on the “Next” button.
The Java Runtime Version
1.3.1 will now be installed on your system. At this point, during our testing, we have found that some installations of Windows XP return an error, with a message stating:
If this happens to you, ignore it for the moment, and continue with the installation following all the instructions. But, when you get to the end of step 6, before following the instructions in step 7, please restart your computer. After the restart, continue with the instructions at step 7. |
|
|
i. The installer will now continue with the Tomcat installation. Click on the “OK” button to continue. |
|
|
j. After a short pause, the Tomcat installation screen will be displayed. Click on the “Next” button. |
|
|
k. You will now be
presented with the Tomcat License agreement. Please read it and, if you
agree to its terms, click in “I Agree” to continue with the installation.
|
|
|
l. The next screen allows you to choose which parts of Tomcat you would like to install. Click on the “+” symbol beside the word “Tomcat” in
the list to expand all the options. Check the “Service” option.
Uncheck the “Examples”
option (unless you really want them!).
Your screen should now
look like the one shown here.
Click on “Next” to
continue. |
